Intelligence-Gathering

In a battle with the creationists, information is a potent weapon. Creation-fighters must therefore come to know the creationists and their arguments as well as the creationists know themselves. The creationists will come up with a standard array of "scientific arguments", including statements involving the age of the earth, the fossil record, the geological strata, the second law of thermodynamics, and the origin of life. Fortunately, these arguments have not changed much in the past twenty years, and all have been thoroughly and repeatedly refuted by scientists. All creationist-fighters must have at least a working knowledge of the creationists' favorite arguments and how they can be answered.

Probably the best source of intelligence and useful information is the creationists' own writings. The ICR, CRS and CSRC all publish periodical newsletters and other publications. It is a good idea to have some sympathetic people get on the mailing lists for these organizations, and then scan every piece of literature for unguarded admissions on the part of the creationists. Since the creationists are open (to their supporters) about the religious goals of their campaign, it will not be difficult to pick out numerous references to the religious motives of their "balanced treatment" campaign (in fact, their incessant compulsion to "witness for Christ" at every available opportunity makes the creationists their own worst enemy). For instance, in the October 1989 ICR Impact, entitled, "Teachers Can Teach Creation Science in the Classroom", by Robert Simonds, the second paragraph acknowledges, "The US Supreme Court developed a three-pronged test in Lemon v Kurtzman as to when government involvement in religious activity does not violate the establishment clause: (1) the activity must have a secular purpose, (2) its primary effect must be neither to advance nor inhibit religion, and (3) it must not constitute excessive entanglement of government with religion". Then, just four paragraphs later, Simonds openly admits, "This is nothing less than a spiritual battle for the minds of all America's children. Evolution, consistently applied, denies God's existence and His creative acts". Thus, Simonds is helping creationist-fighters to establish that (1) the creationists have a religious, not a secular, purpose in mind, and (2) the intended effect of their campaign is to advance religion, nothing more and nothing less. Nuggets like these are invaluable if a court battle becomes necessary.

Another good idea is to infiltrate a number of sympathizers into the local creationist organizations, where they can provide covert information on the creationist group's strategy, tactics, financing etc. If a number of such sympathizers are available, it is very helpful to actually allow one or two of them to be exposed as anti-creationists and kicked out. This will, in turn, force the creationists to be suspicious and paranoid of every "supporter" who walks in the door, which will hamper their ability to organize.

Of course, the creationists are likely to attempt this tactic as well, so the anti-creationist organization must be completely open and make all its decisions in open forums. The anti-creationists, after all, have the law on their side and no secrets to keep, while the creationists must make every effort to hide their religious motives and try to present themselves as "scientific".
